This isn’t what I expected when I read it would be a universal socket. I’ve had a few universal sockets over the years and they’ve always been the same style - a lot of straight rods attached to springs that depress and form the shape of the item you’re tightening. Personally, I’ve always thought they felt weak, but they worked well for oddly shaped fasteners like eye hooks and hanger bolts. This one takes a different approach. It’s meant for hex head bolts, not everything under the sun. The shape it creates is a hex, and it cannot deviate from this. You must pre-select the size of the hex by twisting the outer sleeve of the socket. The internal arms which make up the hex shape will expand or contract based on how tight the outer sleeve is. The size it can accommodate ranges from 7/16-3/4 inches. This design makes it a far better choice for standard hex head bolts than other universal sockets. The fit it creates is tight, and hugs every corner. Even if the bolt head is damaged the teeth can create a secure fit as long as the sleeve is properly tightened. And the design ensures this by providing a hex shaped neck at the base of the socket. The socket attaches to 1/2” drive socket wrenches, but the 1/2” drive is inside a hex head neck. This hex shaped neck gives the user something to grip onto with pliers or a wrench to provide more leverage when tightening the sleeve. So for heavily damaged bolt heads, you can essentially crank down hard on the sleeve to force the teeth into a tighter configuration. It’s much more heavy duty than those springy round rods found in other universal adapters. That doesn’t mean it’s a replacement for that style, but this is a great complimentary accessory every one should have in their toolbox. I highly recommend it.

What a fantastic tool to add to anyone's collection. When I first received his tool I went ahead and took it out to some gates I have on my property to test it. The gates have bolts and nuts that are anywhere from 12 mm to 14 mm. Some of them are stripped some of them are in good condition. I brought out my electrical DeWalt wrench and connected disc to the wrench see how it works. When first using this I used it with the DeWalt wrench and put it on a 12 mm good condition socket/bolt that didn't have any rust on it. I began turning it to see how it would unscrew. This universal socket wrench begin to unscrew the 12 mm bolt with no issues. After I did five full rotations I confirmed that it was starting to get loose so I tighten it back up since it was holding my gate. After that I decided to go ahead and try it on a 14 mm bolt that was Rusty and stripped. At first I didn't feel like it was grabbing well to that specific bolt but with a little bit of adjustment and more pressure put on to this universal socket wrench it begin to loosen up the rusty 14 mm bolt. I was able to fully loosen the bolt and then grab a new bolt and use it to tighten the new bolt into place. One thing that I recommend if you're purchasing this to use it I would not use it with the impact wrench or a drill driver. I would simply use this with a hand wrench and hold it into place flat to make sure the mating surface gets as much bite on it as possible. This is definitely a tool that I'll frequently be using with this type of application.

I'm always sucked for gadgets and a firm believer that you can never have too many tools, so I just had to order this up. The concept of this adjustable socket is pretty simple, it has six flats that are held in place with a ring, and and be adjusted smaller or wider by turning the outside collar. In use, I found it easier to put the socket on the nut, then tighten it until you get a good solid fit. I tried it out on a couple rusty bolts on my boat trailer and you can definitely put plenty of torque on this without it feeling like it's going to let loose in any way. The only downside of this design is it's big, so for some bolts, like the loose on on my trailer tounge, I had to bust out a conventional socket. They also include an adapter to use with your drill. While I haven't tried it yet, I would assume this design may be prone to loosening up with an impact driver just by nature of how it adjusts and physics. Overall, this is a handy little addition to the tool chest and much more convenient than dragging a whole socket set with you for every project.

I keep a good set of tools with me when my family travels just in case I get caught in a situation where I need to fix something to get home. Unfortunately not knowing what you will need you end up having a bag with a lot of tools in it. A tool like this can help save a bit of space by working as multiple different sockets. The socket is pretty heavy and feels pretty durable for heavy use. I used it once while I was away from home and my toolbox and it did come in handy. The socket was easy to adjust and it gripped really well around the bolt and removed it with ease. The only downside to a tool like this is that because of the mechanism needed to adjust sizes it makes the outer diameter extra thick which may make it hard to get into tight spaces.

A different kind of universal socket, doesn't use the "bunch of pins" model that's common elsewhere. It came in a small bag, but it's actually a bit heavy and just big enough to not get lost in your toolbox. In order to set the right size, you'll be turning a wide outside ring or steel jacket clockwise or counter-clockwise. In actual usage, this works out pretty well. However, because of the way the socket is designed, you need at least a 1/2" of free space around the bolt you want to work with. If you're trying to get a bolt out from a tight space, this will not fit there. Finally, it looks pretty sturdy, so as long as the inner springs are not damaged (not very likely but possible), this socket wrench will last you a long time. Recommended...

Here's a neat thing. We've seen a lot of inventions over the years trying to make an all in one socket and I think this one does it a little better than most. It obviously won't fit every size but it has a pretty good range. It also won't be your go to for every single nut or bolt, due to its size you'll have to have a good amount of room around the nut or bolt to use it. But I think overall it could be quite handy. It seems to be well made and should be sturdy enough for most jobs around the house.

What sizes does it actually fit? +

Hex nuts and bolt heads from 3/8″ to 3/4″, which is 10 mm to 19 mm. Outside that range the jaws won't seat properly. You don't dial in a number — you open the sleeve, push it on, and the jaws close on the flats.

Will it work on a rounded-off nut? +

On a head that's worn, painted over or lightly rounded, yes. The jaws grip the flats that are left, which is more contact than a loose six-point socket gets. On a head that has been turned into a circle, no socket will hold it — that's an extractor job, and we sell the kit for it.

What tools do I need? +

A 3/8″ ratchet, breaker bar, torque wrench or impact wrench drives the socket directly. The included adapter gives it a 1/4″ hex shank for a drill, impact driver or cordless screwdriver.

Can I use it on an impact wrench? +

Yes, on a 3/8″ drive. Use it the way you'd use any socket on an impact: seat it fully first and keep it square to the fastener. The jaws are what grip, and they grip best when they're loaded evenly.

Is this the same thing as a bolt extractor? +

No. This grips the outside of a nut or bolt head. An extractor bites into a fastener that's snapped off or stripped on the inside. Different failure, different tool.
