Modnestic sells hand tools for removing damaged fasteners. They work by cutting into hardened steel under load. Read this before you use them.
Wear eye protection
Extractors work by biting into metal. Chips come off. A fastener under high torque can also fail suddenly and send fragments in any direction. Safety glasses are not optional for this job — wear them every time, even for the quick one you think will be fine.
Secure the workpiece
If the part can move, it will — usually at the moment the bolt breaks loose. Clamp it, brace it, or work on it while it is still bolted to the vehicle or machine. Do not hold a part in one hand and drive an extractor with the other.
Know your torque limit
These tools are hardened, but every tool has a limit and so does every fastener. An impact wrench can generate far more torque than a rusted bolt or a small extractor can take.
Start with steady, controlled pressure. If the bolt is not moving, stop and apply penetrating oil rather than increasing force. Heat, longer breaker bars and higher impact settings all raise the chance of snapping something — the extractor, the bolt, or the part around it.
Drilling a pilot hole
If the bolt has snapped off flush, the 10PCS set requires a pilot hole. Centre-punch first so the drill bit does not wander off the stub, keep the drill square, and go slow. A pilot hole drilled off-centre or at an angle makes the extraction harder, not easier, and can damage the thread you are trying to save.
Use a standard twist bit rated for steel. Do not use the extractor itself as a drill bit.
The extractor is not a drill bit
The 10PCS extractor has a 1/2" hex body and is turned by a socket — on an impact wrench, ratchet or breaker bar. It is not designed to be held in a drill chuck and spun at speed.
The 14PCS set is 3/8" square drive. The adapter included in that set converts to 1/4" hex so it can be run from a drill or impact driver, but the working principle is still torque, not speed.
Not for use on live systems
Do not use these tools on pressurised lines, fuel systems, or components carrying current, without first isolating and depressurising them. Do not use them on structural or safety-critical fasteners without the knowledge to assess whether the component is still fit for service afterwards.
Keep away from children
These are workshop tools with cutting edges. Store them in their case, out of reach.
Results vary
Fastener extraction depends on how badly the head is damaged, how deeply it is seized, what the bolt is made of, and how much room you have to work. We describe what these tools are designed to do and show them doing it, but we cannot guarantee any specific fastener will come out.
